My Reflection: Historical Fiction is a genre that can be based of real life events, the characters and some events may be made up, but for the most part the story is accurate. Historical fiction needs to be accurate to the setting including time period, place and character in the novel. If the story is set during a war then it is significant that the details of the war and what life was like for people during that time period. getting details correct as both a teacher and an author is what validates your credibility. In the classroom I can use historical fiction novels to teach my students history of either the united states or other countries as well. Literature can be used to talk about past time periods and religious movements, political movements, wars colonization of various places and more. Historical fiction is probably the most used genre of literature in classrooms today.
We as a classed discussed the historical novel "The Witch of Blackbird Pond" in which teaches us about what life was like for an orphaned girl leaving Spain and coming to live in New England and what life was like for her living among the Puritans. This book depicts the struggles that outsiders faced with Colonist rapidly claiming lands and even other people as their own. While some of the details about the struggles that Kit faced may be true, the characters are made up and the story itself is made up.
1)Setting: the setting is a very significant factor in the history of the “Witch of Blackbird Pond”, as Kit feels out of place when around the puritans. She dressed different and acted out of society’s views.
2)Time: the time period has everything to do with this story, everything from religious views, family values and also one of the reason that people were getting trialed for witchcraft.
3)Value of Education: the setting has a huge impact on the value of education, which could be why some people are very uneducated and Kit has to tutor/teach prudence in secret.
