Picture Book Evaluation: Barbie “The Pearl Princess”
Illustrations
· I feel as if the illustrations are wonderfully done, they accurately describe the actions that are going on and portray the characters emotions and personalities very well. They show everything from the emotions of love, and an evil look on the villain’s face, also a sense of being mischievous. The colors in the illustrations. The illustrations help to bring the action and the characters to life, it is almost as if you are underwater with Barbie and all of her friends.
Text
· The text makes you get into the feelings of the characters like if they are scared, or feeling happy or thinking some evil or full of regret. It is also full of adventure like when Lumina went on the adventure to find the castle and go to the ball and she faces some obstacles along the way. The text is full of adventure, magic, princesses and princes, villains and acts of courage and kindness. It also involves intertextuality mixing some older stories that children might be familiar with such as, Cinderella trying to find the way to the ball and like many other fairy tales the princess gets kept away in secret to be kept safe. It also allows the children or reader to be familiar with Barbie playing the role of the character Lumina. It is also an easy read for children around 3rd or 4th grade.
Low Stakes Writing Assignment. "Where The Whild Things Are"
"Where The Wild Things Are" is a fantastic picture book. the illustrations are not extremely colorful or bright but yet they are captivating. The story and it's pictures illustrate lovable characters that bring the reader into another world. The story and the pictures create an imaginary world and lots of adventure for the reader. it is also easy to tell what is happening in the pictures as the reader goes through the book as well. Things to be looking for in a good picture book is detail, do the pictures stay true to the action in the story? are they appropriate and well thought out to engage the reader's attention?
Caldecott assignment
I would award the Caldecott assignment to Barbie: The pearl princess because it is full of action and is imaginative for children and they are also familiar with the character. The pictures accurately describe the actions that are in the story, the colors brings the characters and the story to life. And it is also uses life lessons such as be nice towards others, or they might not return the favor. And being mean to others does not always get you want you want. This is a book that is full of both color, adventure, imagination and lovable characters.
My Reflection: · I believe that the picture book being used in the classroom should be an accurate representation of what is happening in the book; for instance, if the book is set in colonial times then the illustrator might not want to have people using cell phones and driving nice cars around. The picture should be accurate to both the setting and the action happening in the plot. The pictures should also be age appropriate and help set the tone of the book. I believe that a good picture book is able to tell the story and what is happening in the story, along with give a love for the characters without the words, but of course the words are a significant part of the book as well. As a teacher I can use picture books in the classroom to help teach lessons, whether it is in math, science, language etc. or
I can just use picture books to share with my class for plain fun. I enjoyed doing the picture book evaluation and the caldecott assignment and looking into this genre because pictures can be an essential part to a children's story and this assignment helped me to understand what I am looking for in a picture book and what I would want to share with my students as well. These assignments not only helped me to understand what I am looking for, but what others are looking for in a picture book as well.
